My first go at the Atari Punk Console. It is a super easy circuit to build. Got it from Timer, Op Amp, & Optoelectronic Circuits and Projects by Forrest M. Mims III. I didn’t use volume control because I’ll usually be plugging it into an amp or other effects anyway.

Use slightly thicker gauge sheet metal.
Proper metal shears for straight cuts will help.
Need to reinforce saggy areas of sheet metal because every time I pull out the instrument cable the entire thing almost falls apart. :/
Eventually I’ll add an 8 Step sequencer to this thing and make a nicer looking more sturdy housing. I was just sick of it being all dangle-y and out in the open.

Atari Punk Console: Square Waves!
Substituted some parts that I didn’t have, so it doesn’t sound quite right. A video will come eventually when I built the sequencer and some other things to go along with it.

Here they are! Not too bad for my second generation of sticks I’ve built. There are some aesthetic problems with the plexi-glass and it fitting into housing. I also wish I routed the joystick area a bit deeper so that it didn’t bend the plexi when mounted. Next time I will use acrylic and the table saw to make more accurate wood cuts. Better than eyeballing the cuts and every piece being a hair off.

Finally put together the sticks and soldered all the wires. Just need to crimp the wires to the disconnects and plug em’ into the buttons. I still have some sanding work to do on the Plexi for the Octopus stick. You can see from the pictures that it does not line up well with the housing and will be a terrible eyesore.

Kim Phuc, Hoax, Rival Mob, Pissed Jeans, Ceremony was awesome last week.
Hoax, they’re angry. Definitely going to see them again @ 538 Johnson in April. Too bad SQRM ain’t playin’.
Apparently if you don’t have the right tools, it messes up your whole project. All is not a loss though. Luckily 12ft of Red Oak is only $20. I finally found the appropriate rabbeting router bit to make the recessed holes and I’ve redesigned how the stick is being built.
Originally I had the mitered sides with no supports when I assembled the box. This is a pain in the arse when trying to glue it because it becomes pretty messy and unstable. The seams were a bit off so I sawed everything apart and I’m starting over. There will no longer be any recessed squares for the USB connection. I will be mounting them flat to achieve a much cleaner look than I already planned. As for mitering, I am now adding an inner box so I can make some Kreg joints and glue/clamp the outer aesthetic layer to it. This will allow easier assembly and a better gauge for mounting the MDF/plexi panels.
I guess Friday is build day… again. Now I know why people charge so much for these things.
I decided to try and tackle finishing off my arcade sticks today. Too bad I’m a novice woodworker! Found some problems with the original pieces I cut where button placement was too close. This gave me an excuse to go buy more wood and use the smaller size I wanted. I went from 4” height down to 3”. This made cutting easier and it is more pleasant aesthetically. Here are some shots of my progress (plus background spoilers!).

Lubrano got me some crazy awesome art, but I’m not going to post it until the sticks are done. Last shipment of buttons and balltops is on it’s way and I should be done with everything by Sunday.
Can’t wait to play me some fighting games and shmups!
Decided to post some games I picked up while in NYC at the Racketboy meet last weekend.[ Gyruss, Section Z, Darius Twin, Bio Hazard Battle, Thunder Force III ]
